Central Message
Explanting the newer pre-stent percutaneous valves with infective endocarditis warrants heightened awareness and caution.
Perspective Statement
The Alterra pre-stent and Sapien valve are now part of our specialty’s percutaneous pulmonary valve options, predominantly for patients with prior trans-annular patch repair of tetralogy of Fallot with a dilated outflow tract and annulus. The double strut structure and radial force of the Sapien valve pose unique surgical challenges, particularly in the context of infective endocarditis.
